5 Indoor Games for a Rainy Day on Your Caravan Holiday
You can't always predict the weather, so you may be faced with a rainy day or two on your caravan holiday this summer. Although waking up to gray clouds can be disappointing, it doesn't have to put a dampener on your day. In fact, it may be a good opportunity to get the family gathered around to play the rainy day games all children should know!
So, if it's wet outside and you're stuck for things to do on a caravan holiday, here are 5 of our favourite indoor holiday games perfect for keeping everyone entertained.
The Cereal Box Game
The cereal box game is sure to have everybody laughing, and is perfect for families with young children and teenagers alike. It's also sure to bring out everyone's competitive streak, so make sure you have a prize lined up for the winner! The best part about this game? All you need is a cereal box.
- Stand your cereal box upright in the middle of the floor.
- Take it in turns to lift the cereal box off the ground using only your mouth. You can bend, lunge or squat however you like - but you can't touch the box with your hands, and your knees can't touch the floor.
- Once you've all taken your turn, rip a thin strip off the top of the box until it's slightly shorter. Now it's time for round 2!
- The aim of the game is to keep going until the box is just too small to pick up. The last person able to pick up the box (now just a sliver of cardboard!) is the winner.
Charades
You can't predict the weather, but you can predict that you'll have a great time playing charades! It's almost impossible to play this classic game without laughing, so it's the perfect way to brighten up a rainy day. You don't need anything but yourselves and a sense of humour, so what could be better?
- Take it in turns to think of a book, film, play or television programme, and act it out without using any sounds or props.
- If you're playing with young children it may be a good idea to split into pairs and work as a team to act out the thing in mind.
- Once everyone else has guessed what you're trying to spell out, it's time for the next person to have a go!
Card Games
No caravan holiday would be quite complete without a game or two of cards - even if you're lucky enough not to have any rain! Not only does a pack of cards take up minimal space, therefore making them a much better option than board games for those of you travelling light, but they're also incredibly versatile. That is, there are hundreds of games you can play with just one pack! The suitability of these may vary depending on how old your children are, but even simple games such as 'Snap' are great to pass the time.
If you're looking for something a little more complex, however, we have the answer. Check out our recent blog post Top 3 Card Games For Your Caravan Holidays, where we explain the rules of Rummy, Cheat and Spoons.
The Alphabet Game
The Alphabet Game is sure to get the entire family feeling competitive! To play this game you don't need anything at all except for an imagination and a good knowledge of the alphabet. This game is suitable for people of all ages, although if you're playing with younger children you may want to simplify the rules a little or work in pairs.
- Take it in turns to choose a category - the more inventive the better. If you're stuck for ideas, consider: animals, countries, books, celebrities, food, shops, and so on.
- Once you've chosen your category, take it in turns to go through the alphabet naming something new for every letter. For example, if you chose 'food', the game may proceed like so - A is for apple, B is for banana, C is for chocolate, D is for donuts and so on.
- If you pause for over 10 seconds or fail to give an answer altogether, you're out of the game.
The trick with this game is to be as imaginative as possible, but your answers must be real words. There is always someone who tries to get away with an animal or country they've invented, so it may be wise to have Google nearby!
Twister
It's raining, you've spent hours in the indoor pool, and you've exhausted all your spending money - how about settling down for a game of Twister? Storing a Twister board in your holiday home is a fantastic way to ensure hours of fun, especially if you're trying to keep young children entertained during bad weather. All you need is enough space to lay out the Twister mat and you're good to go!
- Lay the mat out on the floor, making sure to push tables, chairs and any other furniture away from the Twister area. The last thing you want is for someone to topple over and hurt themselves or break something.
- Nominate the first player (usually the youngest person goes first) and spin the Twister board. Wherever the plastic arrow lands, that's what you do. For instance, if it points to 'Right Hand - Red', the rule is to place your right hand on one of the mat's red spots.
- Once the first player has done this, it's time to spin again and give the second player a chance.
- Continue spinning and allocating player's arms and legs to coloured dots until they just can't hold their balance anymore!
- If you fall over, you're out of the game.
Top tip: If you think you're going to fall, try and make your landing as controlled as possible to avoid hurting yourself and other players. Otherwise, happy spinning!
