The Great British Cheese Festival takes place this year from the 22nd to 23rd of September in Cardiff at the magnificent Cardiff Castle. Offering masterclasses and all the cheese you could possibly want, the festival is a guaranteed winner with cheese lovers, as well as lovers of all good food, with the best of Britain’s artisan produce on sale in the festivals market. Never been to Cardiff Castle? Take this perfect opportunity to experience a slice of Cardiff at its finest.
Whether you know a lot or a little about cheese, the demonstrations on offer at the festival guarantee to get you inspired and hungry! You are invited to discover a huge range of British cheeses, sample award-winning products and find out how to match cheese to your wine or cider, whatever your preference! The festival is split into three main venues, the rather grand sounding Cheese Headquarters is split into two themed areas - the House of Commons for families and cheese lovers, and the House of Lords for real foodies; The Hall of Champions allows you to talk to the cheese-makers themselves and indulge in a few samples; and finally The Undercroft offers wine workshops which promise to enhance your palate, and leave you thirsty for more!
The festival boasts Britain’s biggest cheese market, a unique place to find cheeses that are rarely found outside of the villages and towns they are produced in. We suggest you make the most of this rare chance and treat yourself - you won’t find many of these products in your local supermarket! Beyond cheese, the festival’s market also offers game, bread, wine and ice cream stalls - plenty of choice for all the family. If all the tasty produce leaves you parched, make sure you stop off at the festival’s very own pub – the Cardiff Arms – where you can find 25 different ales and up to 30 ciders perfect for quenching your thirst.
Once you’ve had your fill of cheese and cider, the Great British Cheese Festival has a selection of exciting entertainment. The unusual cheese tossing championships and cheese skittles events are open to any who wish to participate and have some fun. The Castle green will also play host to the best live music that Wales has to offer. Why not pack a picnic blanket, settle down with some of your market pickings and a drink from the Cardiff Arms and enjoy the music!
Tickets for the festival are now on sale, you can book yours by calling 029 20 230 130 or visiting the official website.. Tickets can also be bought on the day, but if you do manage to book in advance you are granted free entry to a cheese masterclass – so it’s definitely worth getting organized and taking advantage of the offer! Adult ticket prices are £8.95, concessions £7.95, a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) just £28 and children under 5 go free.
If you’re driving, the festival is easily reached via the M4 and plenty of parking is available nearby. Park and Ride schemes are also offered with free bus shuttle options to get you to Cardiff’s castle.
